Abstract: We discuss recent work concerning forward and inverse scattering for the 1D Schrödinger equation with particular emphasis on the regularity of the impedance function, and hence of the quantum potential. Approximation of an absolutely continuous impedance function with step functions has proven to be a useful tool, leading to new, explicit formulas for the scattering data. The goal is to push this method to its natural limit by establishing its validity for impedance functions of lowest possible regularity.
